Boeing 747-400 (Airliner Color History)
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (October, 1998)
Author: Peter Gilchrist

An excellent look at the Boeing 747-400
The Airlife's Airliner series of books cover individual commercial aircraft types in an interesting, in-depth manner.

Each volume of this British series covers a unique commercial aircraft type from its design, production, entry into service, its usage by airlines, and in some cases eventual demise.

Each volume features plenty of color and black and white photographs of the subject aircraft along with a complete construction list (accurate to date of publication for aircraft types still being built).

This volume covers the most recent incarnation of the Boeing 747 ... the most successful widebody airliner ever built. The 747 may be credited with bringing air travel to the masses ... making airfares affordable to the general population due to the large amount of seats available.

The 747-400 ... while technically similar to its older sisters ... is in fact an almost brand new aircraft ... featuring newer technology and a more advanced wing. Regardless, the 747-400 still carries the same sweeping, unmistakable lines of its earlier sisters ... making it one of the most recognizable shapes in the world.

This Book Flies High!
If you are a civil aviation buff, this book has a wealth of detail on the latest version of the venerable 747, the series -400. The book contains a wealth of information on the design, construction, and operation of all versions of the -400, both outside and inside the aircraft (including the cockpit). Operators of the series -400 are surveyed, and a history of the type is presented. I find myself looking through this book over and over!

Excellent Overall
This book was superb. It had meticulous detail and very informative, clearly written parts. I especially liked the big -500/600 chart somewhere in the middle of the book. It is the best book I have ever seen about the 747-400.

still cookin.
This is the book I learned to cook with. I still own my copy, and still make some of the recipes from this book. Jo's Sloppy Joes are a family favorite, and the brownie recipe is the best I've ever tried. I bought the 2nd edition for my daughter, and she likes it very well. The book includes 4 weeks of dinner menus, suggestions for lunches and breakfasts, party foods, grocery lists, and suggestions for basic cooking equipment, plus instructions on everything from how to ring the bell to talk to a butcher at the grocery store, to how to slice round objects. Should help any new cook get started.

I learned to cook!
This was my first cookbook over 30 years ago. I used it then and I use it now. I'm buying it for my two daughers now.

A must for young cookingphobics
My first cookbook almost 30 years ago. Now I'm tracking down copies for my college sons. With easy-to follow directions for basic recipes and cooking techniques, this book is laced with humor that, while somewhat dated, still resonates with teens and 20-somethings. If you have highschoolers, snap up all the copies you can find right now before this gem goes the way of the dinosaur---or then again, some publisher may get smart and run a reprint!

Wonderful Reading For All Ages
This is a fun book, and excellent family together time. The illustrations captivate the reader making each poem and rhyme come to life. My eight-year-old daughter enjoys reading these at bedtime on her own. From beginning to end you will find true enjoyment from this book.

A Delight for Readers of All Ages
My children received this book as a gift. The clever illustrations immediately captivated them and they were clamoring for me to read it to them. From the very first poem my children were laughing out loud and begging me for more. A great gift for children of all ages.

Excellent. Wonderful writings from a terrific guy.
Guy Gilchrist gives his characters life and meaning. He manages to pull you into his stories much the way Steven King and Dean Koontz do for their readers. A definite "don't miss" if you have children and read them bedtime stories! ~Karen Poserow

Boeing 747 Classic (Airliner Color History)

An excellent look at the Boeing 747-100/200/300/SP
The Airlife's Airliner series of books cover individual commercial aircraft types in an interesting, in-depth manner.

Each volume of this British series covers a unique commercial aircraft type from its design, production, entry into service, its usage by airlines, and in some cases eventual demise.

Each volume features plenty of color and black and white photographs of the subject aircraft along with a complete construction list (accurate to date of publication for aircraft types still being built).

This volume covers the original incarnations of the Boeing 747 ... the 100, 200, 300 and short-bodied SP. Together these variants are the most successful widebody airliner ever built.

The 747 may be credited with bringing air travel to the masses ... making airfares affordable to the general population due to the large amount of seats available.

This book takes an interesting look at the genesis of this aircraft ... its design (it was designed to eventually become a freighter only aircraft, according to Boeing, because by the 1990s we would all be flying on supersonic airliners) ... to the radical idea of a 400 passenger airliner.

An Impressive Wealth Of Facts! A 747 Lover's Bible!!
This is another in a growing list of outstanding publications in the "Airliner Color History" series! Every possible detail you could ever want to know regarding the early ("Classic") models of Boeing's magnificently-enormous 747 Jumbo jet airliner are included in this very well-illustrated 128-page volume!! Tons of information about these awesome flying machines are at your fingertips here. All kinds of technical data & graphs & charts are provided, as well as sections covering "747 accidents", "airline operators" (featuring info & photos on just about EVERY airline ever to operate a B747 Classic!), and "production history" (which is a listing of all 800+ aircraft, including the date each one first took to the skies).
Of course, there are also lots and lots of excellent photographs throughout this comprehensive volume, including many shots of jetliners under construction. In all, this is a MUST for aviation fans, or for anyone who likes to look and read about Boeing's mightiest achievement.

Decorating Your First Apartment : From Moving In to Making It Your Own
Published in Paperback by Lark Books (August, 2003)
Author: Paige Gilchrist
Average review score:

I love this book and I am not decorating my first apartment
Parents definitely buy this book for your college-going kids! Others will enjoy it as well, but the style will most appeal to people under 40. The style is kind of funky-modern. I just bought the book, so I have not read the whole thing, but so far so good. It has instructions and materials lists for creating all the looks in the photos which is lacking in many interior design books. It also has general decorating tips.

Bonus: It describes typical problems to look for in an apartment and how to evaluate an apartment for these problems. It describes potential problems and red tape with the landlord, and how to avoid them, and it explains the renter's contract as well.

If you have just started exploring interior decoration, or are looking for your first apartment or tips to refresh your current one, buy this book!

Not just for first-time renters!
This book has so much information, it should have been called "Renting an Apartment".

Although this book was written for young first-time renters, the information would benefit anyone that rents their home. Even though I'm now living in my 8th apartment, and have renting experience, I found lots of tips and ideas to help make my home more comfortable and pleasing.

This book is split into two parts. The first part addresses what you need to know when renting an apartment, and includes tips on

- what to look for when scouting for a place to live, both in terms of dwelling and landlord
- how to look for a roommate
- what you're expected to pay (or not)
- what you can do in improvements
- how to keep your apartment clean

The second part, my favorite, shows you how to decorate your apartment on a budget, and includes DIY projects that are imaginative and down-right cheap, such as:

- painting walls, floors and furniture (how-to and supplies)
- window coverings (using copper pipes for curtain rods)
- separating rooms without building (hanging drapery panels)
- lighting (wastepaper basket lights)
- screens (fabric panels between dowels held straight with concrete)

The writing tone is light and fresh, and perfect for the intended audience. Photography is well done. My only (minor) complaint is that for most projects, there was only one picture of the finished project. The accompanying written instructions are detailed, but I would have preferred pictures along with them. In my view, it's easier to see how something is done, than reading it.

I recommend this book, both for the ideas, and as a starting point.

Honey, I Love

Authors: Eloise Greenfield and Jan Spivey Gilchrist

Musical and saucy
My 5 year old daughter loves this book. She loves the rhythmic style and how you can really hold the "honey I love..." until the next page. The little girl in the book describes various situations that she loves to do with her family and her friends. You can read it straight or read it with hands-on-the-hip, saucy attititude. It's a great read aloud book.

This book is full of spirited poems for one and all.
Honey, I Love is a great book. This is the book I most love written by Eloise Greenfield. Some of the poems in the book remind me of my life as a "little kid". I read this book in fourth grade and loved it ever since. This is a great book for young students, as well as, older ones. The poem in the book entitled, "Honey, I Love", is inspiring to me. I read that poem and feel as if I'm the little girl in the poem. The other poems are also very nice, inspiring, and unique. I would definetely reccommend this book to the young ones. I feel as if they could relate to it. I love this book. It is a wonderfully fantastic book and I commend Mrs. Eloise Greenfield for writing it. Mrs. Greenfield is a very talented writer. I hope to write children's books like her one of these days. "Honey, I love", I love this book HONEY!

Jump Back, Honey: Poems
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion Press (September, 1999)
Authors: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Bryan Ashley, Ashley Bryan, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Brian Pinkney, Jerry Pinkney, Faith Ringgold, Andrea Davis Pinkney, Jan Spivey-Gilchrist, and Carole Byard
Average review score:

A wonderful tribute to a great American poet
"Jump Back, Honey: The Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar" combines several poems from this beloved African-American poet with illustrations from several different artists: Ashley Bryan, Faith Ringgold, and more. Dunbar (1872-1906) was an expert at writing poems in both a formal "literary" English and in a style that evoked African-American vernacular speech (this second type of poem was known as a "dialect" poem). This book includes excellent examples of both modes. A sample from a "dialect" poem: "Fiddlin' man jes' stop his fiddlin', / Lay his fiddle on de she'f."

I liked how several different visual artists contributed to this book; this gives the book a nice sense of variety. My favorite illustrations include Jerry Pinkney's pictures, which are vibrant with color and energy, and Carole Byard's delicate picture that accompanies "The Sparrow."

These are poems about nature, African-American culture, and the joys of love and family life. This book is an excellent choice for a multicultural children's book collection.

Jump back, honey
A versatile group of illustrators add flair to Paul Laurence Dunbar's poetry. Faith Ringgold's portrait of Frederick Douglass gives additional power to "Douglass". Jerry Pinkney's illustrations capture the playfulness and sass of "A Negro Love Song"; and "The Colored Band". Both Carole Byard's and Jan Spivey Gilchrist's illustrations add contemporary color and meaning to this anthology. The notes list brief biographical information on Dunbar and some background data on the title of this book. Some facts about the illustrators are also included in this collection of poems. This book can be used for school and church performances and plays.

Wonderful book!
This is one of the best children's books I have seen in awhile. It has two qualities that are vitally important in any book for young children. First, the illustrations are so bright and silly and full of detail that children will enjoy looking at them alone. Second, the poems are so catchy and whimsical that adults will enjoy reading the book out loud for the hundredth time as much as the first time. This is a book that will give the giggles to adults as well as to children.

The Good Journey
Published in Hardcover by (July, 2001)

Blackhawk flies to the Bright Sun
What a terrific story! A young (?) southern belle, and a General 22 years her senior, get married after knowing eachother for three days, and he whisks her off to the western frontier, so he can try to keep order in the Indian lands.

The injustices that were done to the indians are just one aspect of the things you learn, along with some history of the west; but it's the characters and their story that keep you turning the pages.

Mary, the "heroine" is a woman you can relate to. How she comes to really love her husband, how she adjusts to her new surroundings; her jealousies, her heartbreak, her overall character. The indian characters are wonderful, and really draw you in, you will want to know their story, and even though you already know the outcome, you are still routing for them to win their war. Especially Bright Sun, what she goes through being a translator for the white man and the Sauk, being a woman indian in the time of war, trying to hold what she loves together, and what she believes...well some of it is truly heartbreaking. You will admire her strength and courage. The General, himself, is an unforgettable character, I only wish there was more info on his life.

The story keeps you turning the pages to find out what is happening, it keeps the characters firmly planted in your head, and even your heart because you really "feel" for them, and the ending is wonderful, as well as satisfying, it ties up all the loose ends that you are waiting for throughout the book.

Go west, young man,(woman), and take the journey.

Enjoy, Debbi

An Excellent Journey!
This is one of those books that rarely comes along. Micaela takes your hand from the first page and with every word there after, you both want to devour this book and savor each word all at the same time. The story of Mary, a rather spoiled southern belle who is rapidly in danger of becoming a spinster, and Henry, a general who at 40 has decided he wants her for his bride becomes a truly breathtaking tale. Mary weds Henry and he takes her to the western frontier. The book tells the story of Mary becoming a woman and learning to love this stranger who is her husband. It is also the story of the beginning of the end of the indians who are also a mystery to Mary, especially her husbands relationship with Black Hawk and a female indian translator. For Mary to truly understand herself, her husband and his relationship with these two indians is the making of a truly great novel. One that after even 400 pages seems to end too quickly. I really loved this book!

A truly well written, great book!
From the moment you begin reading this historical novel, you'll be pulled into the lives of Mary Bulliett and General Henry Atkinson. The story between this husband and wife is beautifully written and described with such great detail, you actually feel like you are there witnessing the daily struggles and lifetime tragedies these two extraordinary characters experience. The book is based on real people and events, which occurred in the early 1800's - a time when Indians and white man battled over the land. Ms. Gilcrest has done an excellent job telling their story while at the same time developing their very authentic personalities. A truly well written, great book!

Lemonade Sun: And Other Summer Poems
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (February, 1998)
Authors: Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Jan Spivey Gilchrist
Average review score:

Lemonade Sun
With this book of poems you can smack your lips with the tangy sweetness of taste, sound, touch and remember. JELLYFISH touches my memory with clear pictures of a child at the shore. These verses remind me of Jane Yolen's COLOR ME A RHYME, and my own ANIMAL ACADEMY, with its playfulness and spontaneity.

Absolutely Refreshing!
Jan Spivey Gilchrist's impressionistic illustrations capture the imagery of poet Rebecca Kai Dotlich's carefree summer. You'll lick your lips after drinking in LEMONADE, hold your ears as FIREWORKS explodes off the page and you'll feel your toes wiggle as BAREFOOT tickles your feet in the new grass. What a refreshing way to wind down a funfilled summer day!

This book took me back to my childhood and sweet memories.
Lemonade Sun reminded me of my own childhood; I too, grew up in the fifties. It brought back so many memories. I could almost smell the fireflies that we collected in glass jars, and the thrill of being able to do double-dutch longer than the other kids. The lemonade stands, bubbles, dragonflies and jacks are all dear to me. It certainly is a book that children will love, and adults will cherish. My personal favorite is Summer Swinging. The illustrations are incredible! It is truly a fun book for all ages.
